Why do liberals/democrats think that a gun free society would be a good/safe one?

I suppose that there are Americans who support a total prohibition on private gun ownership, but I've been an activist for a long long time and have never met one. The mainsteam liberal position is that individuals have the right to keep and bear arms, and the government has the authority to impose reasonable oversight and regulation on firearms sales and use. You sound a little paranoid.
