I'm a US citizen with a UK marriage visa. How the heck do I get a credit card?

It was challenging enough to get a bank account, but because I'm ineligible to register for the electoral roll, I've not had success in applying for credit cards on line. I just want to establish some good credit in the UK as I'm starting a life here! It seems that this shouldn't be so hard, does anyone know of some options I have?
