It's awkward to go from best friends since pre school to relationship, so that's probably why he acted the way he did. He's pretty comfortable with you staying in the friend zone since you didn't say anything about him giving you vibes that he liked you that way or was going to ask you out. Nothing is wrong with you, it just wasn't going to work out that way for you two. Hopefully you guys still stay friends.
